(April 2017 – June 2018)
On April 26, 1937 the Basque city of Gernika was bombed in an act of total warfare under the orders of General Franco. Gernika had low military significance and many were gathered in the city for the busy Monday market day. Gernika Gogoratuz: Remembering Gernika commemorated the 80th anniversary of this attack on Basque civilians in Gernika. The exhibit recalled events leading to the bombing and the outcry afterwards, as well as highlighted how the city is thriving today. A tree representing the Tree of Gernika stood tall in the center of the exhibit where patrons were encouraged to add a memorial or memory of those who lived and died at Gernika.
