Jaialdi® is a Basque festival held in Boise, Idaho, every five years. The word Jaialdi is Basque for “festival.” This summer festival celebrates Basque culture through dance, music, sports, food, and drinks. Jaialdi is hosted by Boise’s Euzkaldunak (Basque Center) and draws in over 30,000 attendees. The very first Jaialdi was held in 1987, as a one time event. It was very well attended and the Idaho Governor asked that the festival be held again in 1990, to celebrate Idaho’s 100th anniversary. After the 1990 festival, it was decided to hold Jaialdi in Boise every five years. Each year (1987, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015), Jaialdi has published a program highlighting events of the festival and also featuring snippets of Basque history in America. Over time, these highlights of Basque history showcasing families, clubs, dance groups, musicians, athletes, businesses and more have become a valuable resources in researching the history of Basques in the American West. In collaboration with Jaialdi and Euzkaldunak we are able to share these programs online!
