Popular Music: A Doorway to Basque Culture Through History

 Join Mikaela Goicoechea as she discusses Basque Popular Music Genres, specifically those from the past century. The historical progressions of prominent and popular music genres, such as folk, punk-rock, and erromeria, and their socio-cultural contexts will be presented.

Mikaela Goicoechea currently holds the position of Music Programs Director for the North American Basque Organizations (NABO) and has launched projects, such as Foku Musikala, a monthly installation of resources related to Basque songs. Ms. Goicoechea has also served as Udaleku (NABO’s Basque Summer Camp)’s Singing Instructor, teaching Basque-American youth about both traditional and popular Basque music. Ms. Goicoechea recently completed her Bachelor of Music degree in Music Learning and Teaching and a Minor in Spanish Language Studies from Arizona State University.
