Please join us on Thursday, March 16 at 6pm for “Irulegiko Eskua: How a treasure
from the past can help us understand Basque new-speakerism in contemporary
Nafarroa,” a presentation by Eukene Franco-Landa, PhD Candidate at the University
of Miami.
Irulegiko eskua is an archeological find from the 1st century BC, presented to the
public in 2022. It is a bronze hand-shaped plank with what looks to be a Basque text.
It was found recently in the south of Iruñea, where Basque keeps being denied as a
local language. How can a historical finding like this contribute to social change and
a path to officiality?
