(April 2017 – present)
On April 26, 1937 the Basque city of Gernika was bombed in an act of total warfare under the orders of General Franco. Gernika had low military significance and many were gathered in the city for the busy Monday market day. Gernika Gogoratuz: Remembering Gernika commemorates the 80th anniversary of this attack on Basque civilians in Gernika. The exhibit recalls events leading to the bombing and the outcry afterwards, as well as highlights how the city is thriving today. A tree representing the Tree of Gernika stands tall in the center of the exhibit where patrons are encouraged to add a memorial or memory of those who lived and died at Gernika.
