SUMMARY:KORRIKA
DESCRIPTION:Join us on March 28 at 2pm in front of the Basque Museum for KORRIKA!  \n2pm– Meet at the Museum- bring your flags and signs! \n2:15– Walk to the Capitol and pause for photos! Then on to the final destination! \n2:50– Arrive at Cyclops to watch Hori Bai perform for Treefort! \nWhat is KORRIKA? \nKORRIKA is a huge event in support of the Basque language\, taking place across the Basque Country. The goal is to promote awareness in support of AEK and to raise funds to assist in its daily work. \nThe first KORRIKA took place in 1980\, starting in Oñati and finishing in Bilbao\, covering the entire Basque Country. Since then\, it has become one of the largest and most significant events organized in support of the Basque language. 23 Korrika events have taken place since then\, and 45 years have passed. From 19 March 2026\, Korrika will tour Euskal Herria for the 24th time\, spending 11 days and 10 nights on the road. A march of 2\,500 kilometres in support of the Basque language\, with thousands of participants of all ages and backgrounds\, marching day and night without stopping. From start to finish of Korrika\, the runners pass the baton from hand to hand and kilometre to kilometre. Inside the baton is a message which will be read out when Korrika reaches the finish line. Until then\, the message remains a secret. Held every two years\, Korrika has become a much-supported and much-loved event that shakes up Basque society. The number of people taking part is constantly growing. Thousands of people are involved in organizing the Korrika in committees set up in villages and neighborhoods. During the campaign\, which lasts for several months\, hundreds of festivals and cultural events are usually held\, from the presentation a few months before until the festival on the last day. In addition to promoting Basque culture\, we are committed to making Korrika more responsible: based on feminism and social responsibility\, championing diversity and considering its ecological footprint. This is the best way for AEK and Korrika to give back all that love and support to society\, in their opinion. \nMESSAGE \nI am the Basque language people\, a way of life\, a way of being. Like fire\, I am always the same\, always new. Welcome to my home\, to our home. From the past to the present\, a refuge whose doors are always open. You and I are the Basque language. We are one. We are a million Basque speakers\, and we will be more. We are a free and open community being reborn\, creating our future together. We are Euskal Herria\, the land we are going to cross from one end to the other. Speak up and take action to prioritize diversity and mutual care. Take the plunge and get involved\, we want adult Basque learning at the forefront. We are all essential. Everyone has value\, and every speaker is important. Those who have enrolled in the euskaltegi\, those whose first language is Basque\, those who have come from abroad\, those who want to learn and live in Basque in the Basque Country. \nWe are all one people. \nWe are Euskara. \nListen to Korrika’s appeal. \n Let’s quiver\, let’s be strong.  \nThe Korrika flames have been lit!… \n

SUMMARY:Threads of Memory presented by Oihane Pardo Perez
DESCRIPTION:2026 Eloise Garmendia Bieter Chair in Basque Studies\nIn Collaboration with Boise State Basque Studies and the Basque Museum and Cultural Center \nJoin us March 31 at 6pm at the Basque Center for special lecture Threads of Memory: Designing Local Identity for Global Presence with Oihane Pardo Perez. Oihane will reflect on iconic Basque garments\, anecdotes of Basque influence in global fashion\, and the role of women in cultural transmission. \nOihane Pardo Pérez (1986) is an architect\, entrepreneur\, and founder of the brand Amarenak\, born in Donostia/San Sebastián. \nAfter earning her degree in Architecture and pursuing an international career — working in Barcelona\, Tenerife\, Brussels\, and Shanghai — she returned to Donostia in 2016 and founded Amarenak\, a design project based on the contemporary reinterpretation of traditional Basque clothing. \nOver the past decade\, she has revisited and reimagined Basque material heritage and significant historical narratives through fashion\, combining local production\, sustainability\, and cultural transmission. Her work demonstrates how design and art can serve as powerful tools to increase the visibility of a minoritized culture and to position it internationally. \nToday\, she approaches design as a form of cultural activation and a means of strengthening territorial identity\, building bridges between the Basque Country and its diaspora. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Poetry Night with Leire Bilbao
DESCRIPTION:Join us April 2 at 6pm at the Basque Museum for a special presentation by accomplished poet Leire Bilbao. \nLeire\, born in the coastal town of Ondarroa\, was an award winning bertsolari in her youth and is now the author of several poetry collections including\, Between Fish Scales\, her English-language debut. Her work has been described as a “visceral view of motherhood\, work life\, and plural desire in a maritime landscape\, both hyper-real and eerily anthropomorphic.” \nLeire will share a few selected poems and will also speak about her life in the Basque Country as a poet. \nThis event is in collaboration with Boise State University and will be catered by Ansots. \nThis event is free and open to all! \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Karmele
DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 19 at 6pm at the Basque Center for a showing of the incredible film\, Karmele. \nKarmele is a story of sustainability\, resilience\, and dignity in the face of oppression- a journey woven through culture\, music\, and art. \nBased on the real experiences of Karmele Urresti and Txomin Letamendi and inspired by the novel\, “Elkarrekin Esnatzeko Ordua” (Time to Wake Up Together) by Kirmen Uribe. \nSynopsis: Karmele and her family take refuge in France after being expelled from their home due to war. There\, Karmele is invited to take part in the Basque cultural embassy in exile\, which seeks to fight the war through music and dance\, and she meets Txomin\, a professional trumpeter whom she falls in love with. After living for some time in Venezuela\, the couple returns to their homeland to fight against the dictatorship\, hoping to reclaim everything that was taken from them. \nAbout the Director: Asier Altuna\, after the success of his first short film\, Txotx (1997)\, co-directed with Telmo Esnal\, went on to make several more short films\, television series\, and commercials. In 2005\, he joined Esnal yet again to direct his first feature\, Aupa Etxebeste! with which he landed the Youth Award at the San Sebastian Festival and a Goya nomination for Best New Director. In 2008 he founded\, with Marian Fernandez\, the production company Txintxua Films\, with which he has produced several shorts and the documentary feature Bertsolari (2011)\, and the feature films Amama (2015)\, winner of the Irizar Award (Best Basque Film) and Agur Etxebeste! (2019 co-directed with Telmo Esnal). In 2018\, he participated in the omnibus film Gure Oroitzapenak. \n2025 directed by Asier Altuna\, 114 minutes\, in Euskara with English subtitles. \n
